Male body lift surgery addresses the loose, sagging skin that develops following significant weight loss in men. Whether weight loss has been achieved through bariatric surgery, diet and exercise, or weight loss medication, the result is often the same — excess skin that cannot retract, affecting the abdomen, chest, arms, thighs and back. For men, the areas most commonly affected differ from women: the abdomen and chest are typically the primary concerns, with gynaecomastiaenlarged or ptotic male breast tissue — a specific complication of significant weight loss in men that requires its own surgical approach.

Male body lift surgery is not a single procedure. It is a coordinated plan of procedures determined at consultation, staged across sessions where appropriate, and tailored to the areas of concern for each patient. The most commonly performed procedures for men following significant weight loss are a , and , with , and frequently staged alongside.

All procedures at Centre for Surgery are performed under as a day case at our by GMC Specialist Register consultant plastic surgeons.

How Weight Loss Affects Men Differently

The physical changes that follow significant weight loss in men differ from those in women in several important respects. Understanding these differences helps explain why the surgical approach for men is distinct.

Men tend to carry excess weight in the abdomen and chest rather than the hips and thighs. After weight loss, this means the abdominal pannus (overhanging skin apron) and chest skin laxity are typically the primary concerns. The male tummy tuck and belt lipectomy address the abdomen and lower torso; gynaecomastia surgery addresses the chest.

Significant weight gain in men frequently causes enlargement of the breast glandular tissue — a condition called gynaecomastia. This is driven by the hormonal effects of excess body fat, which elevates oestrogen relative to testosterone. After weight loss, the glandular tissue often remains even after the fat is lost, leaving a combination of residual glandular tissue and loose overlying skin on the chest. This requires both glandular excision and skin removalstandard liposuction alone is insufficient where significant glandular tissue is present. Gynaecomastia surgery after weight loss is among the most requested male procedures at Centre for Surgery.

Men who have undergone bariatric surgery or significant diet-led weight loss often present with a higher starting BMI than women seeking body contouring. The implications for surgical risk, staging, and nutritional preparation are discussed at consultation. As a general principle, the closer to a target BMI of 25–30 the better the wound healing outcomes.

Significant weight gain can cause separation of the rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis recti) in men as well as women. Where this is present, a tummy tuck that includes muscle repair — not just skin removal — is the appropriate procedure. This is assessed at consultation.

Excess Skin Removal Procedures for Men

The most male-specific post-weight-loss procedure. Removes excess glandular breast tissue and overlying loose skin from the chest to produce a flatter, firmer, more masculine chest contour. Where significant skin laxity is present alongside glandular tissue, a chest lift component is combined with the glandular excision. Two embedded procedure videos available — see the gynaecomastia surgery page for full details.

Removes excess skin from the lower and mid-abdomen, repairs separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) where present, and tightens the abdominal wall. The male tummy tuck technique differs from the female — the aesthetic goals focus on a flat, athletic abdominal profile rather than an hourglass waist. From £9,000.

Circumferential skin removal from the abdomen, flanks, waist, outer thighs, lower back and buttocks. The most comprehensive single approach for men with extensive lower torso skin laxity after massive weight loss. Performed as a staged procedure at Centre for Surgery. Priced at consultation.

Removes sagging skin from the inner upper arm. Mini arm lift from £4,500; full arm lift from £6,000. Frequently staged alongside abdominal work.

Removes excess skin from the inner thigh. Mini thigh lift from £6,000; full thigh lift from £7,500.

Removes excess skin and fat from the lower back and flanks above the hips. Frequently staged with a tummy tuck or lower body lift for comprehensive lower torso contouring. Priced at consultation.

Removes the hanging lower abdominal skin apron (panniculus) without the full muscle repair and recontouring of a tummy tuck. Appropriate where the primary concern is the functional impact of the pannus — skin irritation, hygiene difficulties, mobility restriction. From £6,000.

How Male Body Lift Surgery Is Performed

Each procedure in a male body lift plan is performed under as a day case at our . Because multiple procedures are often required, surgery is staged across separate sessions to keep operative time within safe limits and allow full recovery between stages.

A typical staging plan for a male patient with abdominal, chest and arm concerns might be: Session 1 — male tummy tuck with SAFElipo™ liposuction. Session 2 — gynaecomastia surgery with chest skin lift. Session 3 — arm lift. The recommended sequence and interval between sessions is determined at consultation based on the patient’s anatomy and overall health.

All procedures are performed under TIVA administered by a consultant anaesthetist. The patient is fully asleep throughout. TIVA is associated with faster recovery, less postoperative nausea, and a more comfortable early recovery than inhalational anaesthesia.

With the patient standing, the surgeon performs preoperative markings for each procedureincision lines, planned extent of skin resection, and liposuction zones. The specific incision positions, operative sequence and closure technique are determined by the procedure being performed and explained in full on each individual procedure page.

All incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures. Where drains are placed (tummy tuck, arm lift, back lift, lower body lift), they are removed at the first postoperative appointment. A compression garment appropriate to the procedure is applied before waking from TIVA.

Once recovered, the nursing team monitors you for one to three hours. Written discharge instructions and the 24/7 clinical support number are provided. A responsible adult must take you home — driving is not permitted on the day of surgery.

Recovery After Male Body Lift Surgery

Recovery depends on the procedures performed in each session. The following general principles apply.

Pain is managed with paracetamol as required. Local anaesthetic is infiltrated during each procedure to support the early recovery period. A male tummy tuck is generally the most uncomfortable of the male body lift procedures; gynaecomastia surgery and arm lift typically produce milder postoperative discomfort.

An abdominal compression garment is worn for six weeks after abdominal procedures. An arm compression sleeve is worn for six weeks after arm lift. A compression vest is worn after gynaecomastia surgery. All compression garments are not included in procedure costs and must be purchased before surgery.

Male tummy tuck: desk-based work at two to three weeks; full exercise at six weeks. Gynaecomastia surgery: desk-based work at one to two weeks; upper body exercise at six weeks. Arm lift: desk-based work at one to two weeks; overhead exercise at six weeks. Lower body lift: desk-based work at two to three weeks per stage; full exercise at six weeks per stage.

Significant improvement visible immediately after each procedure. Swelling resolves over three to six months. Scars mature over six to twelve months. Final results from all stages visible at twelve months after the last stage.

24/7 clinical support for the first 48 hours. Wound check at seven to ten days — included. Surgeon review at six weeks — included. Three-month assessmentincluded.
